Watching the new shark movie ‘Dangerous Animals’ on a lake, just as terrifying as you’d expect

Shark movies are terrifying and I am always on edge but when you mix in a deranged serial killer with an obsession for them, my interest is piqued. That’s what got me watching Dangerous Animals multiple times and honestly? It rules.
I was lucky enough to head down to Austin, Texas for a special screening of Dangerous Animals this past weekend. Now, you might be asking yourself “Rachel, you’re afraid of sharks. And you willingly saw this movie twice?” Yes. So that should be all the sign you need to see this as soon as possible. But let me tell you just how I watched it the second time. I truly am a changed woman.
Shudder flew some journalists down to experience Dangerous Animals at Volente Beach in Austin. So yes, I saw this movie surrounded by water. Brave of me, I know. But the overall experience was so much fun, even if I only lasted sitting in the water for about 10 minutes before my fear of sharks took over and told me to sit on the dock instead.
We all got to go to the beach, experience the water park there, and then go sit in the water that is sectioned off for screenings to watch the film. I even almost lost my phone (and myself) to the abyss of this water because I didn’t know it got extremely deep. Truly was living my best life.
A shark movie on the water? More fun than you’d think
The way the event was structured, you could sit in the water and watch or sit on the boat or the dock and experience the film. While I thought I could be brave for a second, that didn’t ultimately work out for me. My fear of sharks, deep water, and the darkness won. But it was still a thrilling experience. Why? Because I got to see a shark movie and watch a bunch of unexpecting audience members get terrified in the process. Delightful.
For those who were floating in the water, they had scuba divers sneaking up on them, grabbing at their fear in the water, and shining a red light to indicate that a shark had attacked them. At first, I was laughing at them. Then a scuba diver tried to get me on the dock and I said that’s enough of having my feet in the water.
Now I know that you can’t have this same experience that I did but I do think that it should inspire you to try to see Dangerous Animals with an audience. Look, like I said, I am not a fan of the shark. And yet Sean Byrne managed to make a movie that furthered my respect of them and reminded me that man is more dangerous than any shark could be to me. Still not getting into the ocean any time soon. That’s the shark’s home.
So get your tickets and make sure to see Dangerous Animals in theaters this week. In the meantime, check out our interview with Jai Courtney for the film!
