The ‘Thunderbolts*’ press tour feels like the MCU really is SO back

There were many press tours throughout the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that were iconic. And Thunderbolts* feels like it is right in step with some of the best of them.
It’s been a minute since a Marvel press tour has really been as big as Thunderbolts* was. To be fair, The Marvels was impacted by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Deadpool & Wolverine didn’t need that much to get people into theaters, and Captain America: Brave New World had a fun premiere and junket, it just wasn’t as big since it wasn’t a team-up film. Now, Thunderbolts* has brought out the big guns. Like the Rizzler.
With big junkets, a world tour, and interview bits with the cast that have since gone viral, it feels like we’re right back to where we used to be. Which is a good thing! That’s part of what brought many fans to the MCU in the first place. We loved the movies but we also loved the cast all interacting together in these spaces and Thunderbolts*‘ press tour felt like a nice return to that.
Did I expect to see the entire cast of a Marvel movie speaking to the Rizzler? No, I didn’t. But it ended up being a delightful part of this press tour!
It’s never ending!
You might be thinking “Sure, I agree, but the movie came out last week. Why are you bringing this up now?” Well, fair reader, the tour just keeps on happening. Most recently, Sebastian Stan was seen changing the posters for the film. Then, later that day, Marvel released an official video of Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes, walking up to the poster on the street of himself as the Winter Solider and putting the new artwork up.
Some have criticized this move, saying that the title change for Thunderbolts* to The New Avengers is spoiling the movie. Others have complained that the weekend turn over with the new title isn’t fair to those who couldn’t go and see it that opening weekend. I disagree. Marvel has always given fans those first few days to remain spoiler free and that’s what happened here.
Even director Jake Schreier got into the fun bits and had Florence Pugh recreate the interview scene from Notting Hill to post about it on social media. And that’s the kind of stuff I love seeing out of junkets!
Sure, it isn’t a picture perfect way of confirming that Marvel movies are back in the collective’s good graces but it is nice to see.
