‘Her husband has 100% made a comment about how cute you look’: Mom tells teacher she’s dressed too inappropriately to be around ‘young boys.’ Then she shows viewers what she’s wearing

A teacher says she had an uncomfortable experience in the car pickup line.
Baylee Javellas (@bayleejavellas) says she was standing there as usual when a mom pulled up and rolled down her window. She says the woman looked her up and down, then said, “Don’t you think you’re dressed a little inappropriately to be around young boys today?”
Taken aback, Javellas asked the mom what she’d just said. The woman repeated it, she says, then added as a parting shot, “I think you can do better.”
Then the mom rolled her window up and drove away, leaving Javellas standing there with her mouth hanging open.
Her TikTok about the encounter has 2.4 million views and over 11,500 comments. People are overwhelmingly on her side.
An ‘inappropriate’ outfit?
After describing the exchange, Javellas shows viewers the look that inspired the mom’s ire.
She’s wearing a baggy t-shirt “that covers my backside,” leggings, and sneakers.
“Maybe if I was standing there like this,” she jokes, pulling her shirt up and sticking her butt out. “But I wasn’t.”
Then she offers a bit of information that puts her wardrobe in further context.
“Also, I teach PE. So any suggestions on what I should wear to teach PE would be great,” Javellas says.
Javellas didn’t immediately respond to a direct message seeking comment.
Divided by leggings
Javellas’ comment about the shirt covering her behind is a nod to controversies leggings have created in recent years.
Some schools have banned the popular leisurewear with dress codes that typically only apply to females. School policies prohibiting leggings have in turn been criticized as gendered and ableist.
Many written and unwritten rules regarding how females dress are based on the presumption that males will be driven to distraction. This thinking holds that they essentially can’t be expected to control themselves when a female wears form fitting clothing like leggings.
Critics of such policies say it’s wrong to penalize girls for boys’ bad behavior.
Those on team leggings have also argued that the item is more comfortable for kids with sensory issues and accessible for children with fine motor skill issues and other handicaps. Also, leggings are inexpensive, so they can be something of an equalizer for kids of different economic means.
Viewers take the teacher’s side
The vast majority of comments on Javellas’ post are supportive.
Many people suggested the problem was with the mom, not Javellas’ leggings.
One person wrote, “Her husband has 100% made a comment about how cute you look.” Judging by the 141,000 likes the comment has thus far received, many agreed.
A common view is that it has nothing to do with her clothing; the mom is simply envious of Javellas’ youth and beauty.
“Sorry—it’s your face card. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing,” said one.
Several offered semi-joking ideas for what Javellas should wear instead of leggings and T-shirts. One urged her to dress like Jane Lynch’s Glee character, Sue Sylvester. Another said perhaps she could mimic their gym teacher by wearing windbreakers, drinking whiskey in a crystal glass, and “yelling at us to run faster.”

Overall, people agree. Javellas’ outfit isn’t the problem
“This is 100% her problem. Not yours,” a supporter quipped.
