Love is hard but the new trailer for Materialists makes us want to fall in love over and over again. Especially with New York City as a back drop.

As a New York transplant, one reason I wanted to move to the city was the magical feel it had in romantic comedies from the 70s, 80s, and beyond. Movies like When Harry Met Sally, Moonstruck, and Breakfast At Tiffany’s made me fall in love with the city and the idea of love. They were captivating to watch and then we stopped really setting rom-coms here.

To be fair, we kind of stopped making romantic comedies for a while (which is sad enough) but in the last few decades, there have been only a handful of movies that are set in New York with love as a central theme. So Celine Song’s Materialists using the style of trailers for the 90s to bring the classic romantic feel to life really works for me.

The film, which stars Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans, is a love triangle between a match maker, her ex boyfriend who she loved but isn’t well off, and a rich millionaire who sweeps her off her feet. Lucy (Johnson) was in love with John (Evans) and the two broke up and then she met the extremely rich Harry (Pascal). You can see the dilemma!

The movie already had my attention. Song’s Past Lives was such an emotionally strong and poignant directorial debut, I’ve been waiting to see how she is going to destroy me here. But I am also a big fan of Evans, Pascal, and Johnson’s work so to see the three in one film about love in the city I adore? Perfection!

The new trailer is nostalgic in the best of ways and even has that iconic voice over that all trailers from the late 80s and 90s used!

Is this appealing directly to me and my sensibilities? Yes, of course. But that’s what makes this movie such an exciting one for fans of these actors and I cannot wait to fall in love, just as Lucy is.
