Bix Caleen’s sacrifice in ‘Andor’ is devastating but important for the rebellion

Episode 9 of Andor season 2 allowed the rebellion to find its footing. But that meant that Bix Caleen had to make a sacrifice in order for it to survive. And it’s not an easy choice but was a necessary one.

Bix (Adria Arjona) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) were in a relationship throughout the run of season 2. Spanning the last few years, we know that there is a deep love between the two and that even when Bix was at her lowest, she was still on the side of the rebellion. So when Cassian comes to her in episode 9, ready to run away, she does what she thinks is right.

Cassian was on Ghorman when the massacre happened. He saw how the Empire used their own force to twist the story and he saw the death and destruction they caused. There are two ways people can react to situations like that when they are on the side of the Rebels: They can be inspired to fight or they can want out.

In that moment, Cassian wanted to be free of the pain of the Empire and if that meant leaving the Rebellion behind, he was okay with it. But Bix saw that this was bigger than them and their love and that someone like Cassian wasn’t just an active part of the Rebellion but a vital one. And so her sacrifice is one that ultimately allowed the Rebellion to win.

There are layers to the Rebellion. There are people like Bix who want to fight and have been through so much are still part of it. And then there are people like Cassian, who have always had to fight and do not realize how important they really are. Luckily, Bix could see that.

The Rebellion needed Cassian Andor and Bix knew that

We, as the audience, know how important Cassian is to the cause. He sacrifices himself so that the Rebel Alliance can get the plans to the Death Star. We know what happens to him but Bix didn’t when she left without him. She even says in her video she left him that they can reunite when this is all over but we know that Cassian won’t see the Rebellion succeed. But he’s why they do.

I do think that Cassian needed a reason to still fight. He saw the pain in Ghorman and he was ready to leave the fight behind and I understand that reaction. But Bix knew better and that’s what makes her sacrifice such an important one. Cassian’s upset led to him thinking of himself and his own happiness and Bix threw her own out the window to protect the larger cause.

So while she took Cassian’s choice away from him, she was doing it because she felt like she knew better and we know that Bix was right! The Rebels needed him and whether he wanted to see that or not, Bix saw it and that’s what makes the ending of episode 9 so emotional.
